Women in today’s society have many modern conveniences when it comes to female vaginal health. We have disposable pads, tampons, condoms, lubricant, sex toys and even underwear. Have you ever wondered, what women did or used before all of our modern conveniences existed? Some of us have heard from our grandmothers that the pads that they used were just rags that were washed regularly. In fact, the first pad was not made until 1896 and even at that time it was not available for mass production. Early tampons were made from lint wrapped around wood, sponges, grasses and other natural things. The first applicator tampon was invented in 1929. Ancient lubricants were usually made of oil, and the first portable, mechanized vibrator was invented in the early 1880s. The first speculum on record is from about 79AD, but it’s evolved a lot since then. Prior to the 1860s women didn’t wear underpants, and modern mass production of underwear only started in the early 1900s.
